The CRESCENDO KIDS MUSIC PROGRAM

is Morin Music’s Early Childhood Music program for Preschool and Primary Students (ages 0-5yrs).

Rooted in the philosophy of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, students gain confidence by experiencing the natural joy and fun of music-making while also gaining knowledge and develop skills in their musical education.

Classes recognize the importance of parent education and devote much time developing a partnership with parents to help them to create a natural enriched learning environment in the home.
Teachers are trained to foster ability while most traditional teachers use the “teach and move on” approach (following a curriculum that is calendar driven)
Teachers understand the potential for assisting parents in creating a rich musical environment before a baby is born and are convinced that the spirit of the child is formed as a result of his/her early environment

Skills in each class are age-appropriate and developed through a combination of singing, instrument playing, creative movement, and musical games and activities.

CORE PRINCIPLES

1. Every child can learn.

The same way we have faith that all children can learn to communicate through their mother-tongue, we know that all children can learn the musical language. Using the music-as-language approach, students develop skills with incremental practice and with the support of their teachers and families.

2. Ability develops early.

Talent education and the lifelong learning begins at age 0. Students build invaluable neural pathways through their repeated experiences throughout life, with rapid growth and development during Early Childhood. There is an invaluable window of learning and development during the preschool and primary school years that can lay the foundation for future confidence and learning.

3. Repetition is the mother of all learning.

We know that children build confidence and internalize knowledge by learning in layers. As opposed to a teach and move on approach, Crescendo Kids curriculum promotes deep learning by allowing students to explore fundamentals in several contexts.

4. Success breeds success.

Our curriculum emphasizes thorough mastery at each layer to build upon with the next. When we observe how character and talent is formed, we know that each step of accomplishment strengthens your position and confidence to move to the next.

5. Encouragement is essential.

The reward of encouragement that the children receive from a supportive parent or adult will speed the learning and allow the child to experience success. Encouragement and support at each step of the learning process must be the fundamental reward of success throughout the learning experience.

6. Musicality precedes musical literacy.

Our students learn music through the ‘music-as-language” approach. Just as a child will first learn to speak and experience something before learning to read and write it, our classes follow this same natural learning approach by first experiencing the concept before expanding to.

Through the Suzuki growing process, children are not only able to become strong and skillful musicians, but also thrive in a total environment of support while developing confidence and self-esteem, determination to try difficult things, self-discipline, concentration as well as the joy that comes through music-making.

Program Goals

We strive to maintain a pressure-free environment where children can develop skills, a sense of self and purpose, as well as an appreciation of discipline and beauty.
As we care for our children, we pursue every opportunity of joy and fullness of life, laying a foundation of confidence and endurance in their later years.
Based on the Suzuki concept of the Mother Tongue Approach, Suzuki Early Childhood instructors help parents understand that just as their children learn to speak their native language fluently, other abilities such as music can be instilled in these precious younger years.

What to Expect:

Music is an extremely effective way to create attachment and strong relational ties between parent and child. This bond is further strengthened as parent and child participate together in a weekly interactive music group class.
Parents will have the opportunity to watch their children develop rhythmic ability, melodic sense, as well as memory and social skills.
Parents are strongly encouraged to use the Curriculum listening tracks and action songs at home and to repeat the songs and material at home in a pressure-free way to interact.
Specific results from this process include increased vocabulary, strengthened social skills, and sensitivity towards others and their environments. One of the key skills for young children is to develop the ability to listen.

The Curriculum:

Connective pathways in the brain are created by repeated early experiences. This is the premise of Suzuki Early Childhood Education as opposed to that of traditional methods of learning. In traditional teaching, curriculum moves quickly from one thing to the next, while Mother Tongue ability is the result of training based on incremental practice.
Classes include children of mixed ages within each age group allowing students to move through the curriculum in stages and according to their level of development. Their ability is firmly and gradually developed at one level before advancing to the next.
The mixed ages in the class allow older children to learn sensitivity and give the opportunity for them to model for those younger than them, while younger children develop skills more quickly and securely with the older children as models.
We prioritize thorough mastery above a "teach and move on" approach. By emphasizing confidence and internalization of musical concepts, students are set up for success and a lifelong joy of learning

Parents as Models and Observers:

Parental involvement and active observation of the stages of development and successes of the child are an incremental component of the Crescendo Kids Music Program. Parents are encouraged to participate fully in the singing, actions and movement to serve as a model for their child. The youngest babies will be unable to participate physically but will be learning the excitement and joy of participation from the parent and will soon want to participate fully.
Parents will also become active observers and develop their observation skills by noting their child’s progress in class. Careful observation will afford many opportunities to celebrate even the smallest steps in learning, and will give parents a chance to celebrate each step towards independence and increased confidence!

The Learning Environment:

Crescendo Kids program recognizes that success in one small step can and will lead to success in the next step.
The emphasis is to create a pressure-free environment where each child is encouraged at their own level of development
Parents are a child's first and most important teacher. By guiding parent and child in class, parents can engage and interact as role models in class
The emphasis in each class is to guide—not to push or pull
Love and acceptance at all levels are critically important. The learning environment must be free of comparison and competition among students and siblings

Transition to Instrumental Studio Lessons:

Crescendo Kids classes are an excellent precursor to instrumental lessons.
A solid foundation of listening skills, rhythmic and melodic awareness creates a smooth and logical transition to learning an instrument.
With increased knowledge of what is needed to create a positive learning environment for their child, combined with developed skills as observers, Parents are given a solid foundation for what is required in home practice for young students receiving private instrumental training.

Ages 0–3yrs

Baby and Toddler students will learn:

A variety of set lullabies and action songs to build confidence through
Listening and sequencing
Understanding size
Pitch skills, correlation of body movements
Number skills, counting in rhythm, body movement and song
Motor skills
Social and emotional development
Vocabulary and language development
Emotional growth while bonding with loved one in an interactive class

The goal of Crescendo Kids baby and toddler class is meant to not only teach the each child music, but most importantly to develop the whole child and to unfold his/her natural learning potential and joy of learning.

Crescendo Kids Level 1

Ages 3–4yrs

Level 1 students will learn:

Producing steady beat & accurate rhythms
Reading and understanding Italian musical terms and dynamics
Basic rhythm reading and dictation
Counting and recognizing meter
Note reading from the grand staff
Musical alphabet
Keyboard geography of the piano
Singing using solfege
Orchestra instrument families

Let your Imagination soar! Crescendo Kids (level 1) is where students reinforce the joy of learning and how to connect with music in the world around them.

With an emphasis on imagination, body movement, vocalization, and introduction to instruments, students learn the fundamentals of music, movement and theory in this fun and interactive weekly class.

Crescendo Kids Level 2

Teachers and parents can observe the effects of music on the overall life of a child. Caring towards the long-term benefits of exposing a young mind to music, and the way that it has the power to unveil the natural potential to learn and grow into a thriving, happy person.

The foundation for later learning is laid by early childhood experiences and by practicing social skills that will set them up for success later in life.

A primary goal children to thrive in an environment of consistent support. The hope is that these students will develop confidence, self-esteem, endurance, self-discipline and concentration.
